An Update

Here we are heading towards the end of October already! We’ve been busy learning lots of things in Kindergarten. This post will attempt to update you on what we’ve been doing.

Bible Verses: We are now working on verse D (“Depart from evil and do good”). Please note that your child does not need to learn the reference. We will try to be ready to say our verse by Thursday.

Our latest Bible lesson focussed on the story, The Pumpkin Patch Parable. The children learned that God is like a farmer who picks us (the pumpkin) and cleans away all of our dirt (sin) then puts a smile on our face and puts a light inside of us so that we can shine for him. We demonstrated this lesson using one of our classroom pumpkins.  Isn’t he cute?

We started something called “Read to Self” in our classroom this week.  First, we talked about three ways to read: reading the pictures, reading the words, and retelling the story.  Next, we talked about some rules for “read to self” time: get settled quickly, read your own books, and read the whole time.  Then, we gave it a try with our own book baskets.  The results were amazing!  By the second day the children were able to “read to self” for 5 whole minutes!  That might not sound like a lot but it felt like a long time of productive, focussed book time.  Our goal is to build our stamina to 15 minutes of sustained reading.  When we reach our goal Mrs. Morris has promised the class a party!  Woot, woot!  (Ahem, by party I mean a short movie and popcorn) 😉

We’ve been working hard at our printing skills these past few weeks.  In Math we have introduced the numbers 1-8 so far.  In Language Arts we have introduced the following phonograms: o,c,a,d,g,s,q,f,l,t,h,b,m,n,and r.  Once all of the single letter phonograms have been introduced, we will be working on printing our own names.

Thank you for sending your child to school with a fall object two weeks ago.  We sorted them by colour and it got us thinking about all different shades of red, orange, yellow etc.  The children enjoyed mixing primary colours together to makes their own palette of secondary colours.

On Thursday an envelope with your child’s interim report should have come home in your child’s home folder.  If you would like to set up an appointment to come in for a chat about how your child is doing please feel free to contact the office and they will set up an appointment for us to do that!

Our school will be hosting a Scholastics Book Fair in the school foyer this week, Tuesday – Thursday.  It will be open before and after school on these days.  A small catalogue came home on Thursday in your child’s home folder.  If you fill out and return the entry ballot on the back, you have a chance to win $25 in books for your family and our classroom.  How great would that be?!

Important “Dress Up” days this week:

Wednesday, October 26 – Knights Day (wear knights t-shirt and casual bottoms)

Thursday, October 27 – Fall Colours Day (wear red, orange, yellow, brown…but no costumes, please)  Note: If you have children in older grades, they will have their Fall Colour Day on Friday.

Well, that’s it for now.  Enjoy the rest of this beautiful Fall day!
